Whole Lotta Love

Not in the UK though. The song was written by Led Zeppelin, based on a song by Willie Dixon that was recorded by Muddy Waters in 1962, and it was the opening track on Led Zeppelin II – the album that turned Led Zeppelin into global superstars (released in October 1969). But Led Zeppelin famously never released a single in the UK, until 1997 when Whole Lotta Love was released by Atlantic Records. It reached No. 21.

Whole Lotta Love was released as a single in other countries; it reached No. 1 in Australia and Germany, and made the Top 5 in the USA, Canada, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The first version to be a hit in the UK, however, was the instrumental cover version released in October 1970 by CCS. This was essentially a group of session musicians formed by the British blues guitarist Alexis Korner. According to Wikipedia, their name stood for Collective Consciousness Society; but I don't remember being particularly aware of this at the time. Their version of Whole Lotta Love reached No. 13 in 1970, and was used as the theme tune to Top of the Pops from 1971 to 1981.
